How to Calculate Flooring

Calculating how much flooring you need is simple:

  1. Measure the room: Measure length and width in feet. For irregular rooms, break the space into rectangles and add them together.
  2. Calculate square footage: Multiply length by width to get the room area.
  3. Add waste factor: Multiply by 1.10 (for 10% waste) or 1.15 (for 15% waste) to account for cuts, mistakes, and future repairs.
  4. Convert to cartons: Divide total square footage by the coverage per carton based on your flooring type.

Acclimation Tips

Most flooring materials need to acclimate to your room's temperature and humidity before installation:

Direction to Lay Planks

Run flooring planks parallel to the longest wall in the room for the most visually appealing result. In hallways, planks should always run lengthwise. If your room has a prominent window, consider running planks toward the light source to minimize the appearance of seams.

Subfloor Preparation

A clean, flat subfloor is critical for a successful installation. The subfloor must be level within 3/16 inch over 10 feet. Remove any old flooring adhesive, nails, or debris. Use self-leveling compound to correct low spots and sand down high spots.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much extra flooring should I buy?
Buy 10-15% more flooring than your measured area. Add 10% for standard rectangular rooms with straight layouts. Add 15% for diagonal layouts, rooms with many angles, or complex floor plans. This accounts for cuts, waste, damaged pieces, and future repairs.
Which direction should I lay flooring?
Lay flooring planks parallel to the longest wall in the room for the best visual effect. In hallways, always run planks along the length. If installing over a plywood subfloor, run planks perpendicular to the floor joists. For open floor plans, run planks toward the main light source.
How much does flooring cost per square foot?
Flooring costs vary by material: vinyl plank ($2-$5/sq ft), laminate ($1-$5/sq ft), engineered hardwood ($4-$10/sq ft), solid hardwood ($5-$12/sq ft), and ceramic tile ($1-$15/sq ft). Installation adds $2-$8 per square foot depending on the material and complexity.
Can I install flooring over existing flooring?
In many cases, yes. Floating floors (laminate, vinyl plank) can be installed over most existing hard floors as long as the surface is flat, clean, and in good condition. You cannot install over carpet. Hardwood nail-down installation requires removing existing flooring down to the subfloor.
Do I need underlayment for my flooring?
Most floating floors (laminate and vinyl plank) benefit from underlayment for cushioning, moisture protection, and sound reduction. Some products come with underlayment pre-attached. Hardwood installed over concrete always needs a moisture barrier. Tile does not use underlayment but requires cement backer board.
